If you’re managing people it’s a critical part of your job to help make sure they feel supported in their work. This is especially true of new employees who need to be introduced to new sets of practices and procedures and welcomed into your organization’s culture. It’s an impactful and time sensitive process that’s important to making sure new employees or volunteers are prepared to do the best job possible.
Video can be an amazing tool for getting them up to speed. Here’s how:
You can show them how it’s done
Shooting an onboarding video allows you to actually recreate and demonstrate situations that may be encountered day to day on the job. This can include using animation to showcase high risk situations that would be too dangerous to demonstrate in person. Seeing scenarios actually play out in real time and supporting those demonstrations with additional infographics is excellent for improving understanding and expectations.
It’s a flexible way to learn
A video on the web can be viewed anywhere, at any time. This allows viewers to learn at their own pace, on their schedule and space out the learning which can improve retention. (See our article about that in this newsletter!) In a world of work from home and hybrid working models it also allows learning to happen from home without people needing to be onsite to get up to speed.
It’s a long-term resource
Videos can be viewed and referenced over and over again. This gives them power well beyond the initial learning. It allows staff to go back to them for a refresher when needed to ensure things are done correctly. This creates opportunities to reinforce learning down the line.
These are just a few of the ways video can add flexibility, durability and consistency to your onboarding process! (And hopefully free up some time for you to get that jack-o-lantern carved!)
